The’purpose-built’ wholesale facilities at Footscray began trading in December 1969. At the time there was great unrest amongst wholesalers over the move from Queen Victoria Market. Many believed they needed to operate on the same site as the retailers. In time this unrest settled and traders began to appreciate the additional space and amenities. After more than 30 years of operation, the Victorian Government has announced the wholesale markets are to be relocated to a new site at Epping in Melbourne’s north by 2011. This will allow the Footscray Road site to be integrated with the Dynon Road Railyard to serve the expanded Port of Melbourne. A quick glance at published Melbourne Market Authority circulars gives the reader you some idea of current operational issues. Market related questions are often raised in State Parliament and recent changes to operating hours have caused great distress among market users. |
