Saline Water

Key Points:

  1. Salinity refers to the presence of soluble salts in soil or water

  2. The most common salt causing salinity is sodium chloride, but there may be a range of other salts such as magnesium, calcium or potassium

  3. Salt is naturally present in soils, surface water and groundwater

  4. Irrigation water that contains high levels of total soluble salts (salinity) can affect the growth and yield of vegetables

  5. The effect of salty irrigation water on crop yields can be reduced by good managementpractices
