Carrot - Powdery Mildew

Key Points:

  1. Powdery mildew (Erysiphe heraclei ) is a problem on carrot crops in NSW, SA and TAS

  2. Symptoms include fluffy white growth on stems and leaves
Foliage becomes brittle, and may eventually shrivel and die

  3. Severe infection can result in foilage loss, making harvestiing difficult and lowering crop yields

  4. Infection is favoured by high humidity and moderate temperatures

  5. Carrots are more susceptible 7 weeks after planting

  6. Water stress will increase disease severity

  7. Preventative control measures include:
    • monitor young crops regularly
    • limit the movement of machinery and equipment from infected areas
    • Maintain good even crop growth with adequate fertilizer and irrigation program
