We sadly mark the passing of Joseph Schreurs on 18 Oct 2012, aged 90 years. Joseph worked with vegetable crops all his life, beginning full-time work with his father at the age of 14. In 1959, Joseph and his wife Rie came to Melbourne from Holland with their five sons Bill, Jos, Theo, Tom and Robert. Just four years later in August 1963, Joseph and his sons, began growing vegetables on 17½ acres at Dingley. Their range of crops included Parsnip, Cabbage, Potato and Celery. Joseph also popularised ‘minor’ crops such as Dutch Carrots. Their business expanded in 1969 with the move to Clyde, 50km south-east of Melbourne, where they specialised in Celery. Celery proved well suited to the heavier soils as were Leeks which were added to the product list in the late 1980’s. Today, J & JM Schreurs & Sons P/L are leading suppliers of Celery, Leek, Baby Spinach and Rocket throughout Australia. Joseph is remembered by his staff as a very friendly and good hearted man with a loving nature. His passing was a great loss to all and he will be dearly missed.
