The recent industry dinner hosted by Rabobank, was well attended by growers and other representatives of the vegetable industry. Rabobanks’ Senior Analyst for Horticulture Marc Soccio, presented an informative “Economic and Market Update” which addressed current trends in the Australian and Global economies as well as the Australian Retail Produce sector.
Marc said that the strongest growth had been seen in the café and restaurant area followed closely by the takeaway food sector. Marc also pointed out that while sales of frozen vegetables remained steady, sales of frozen potatoes, particularly specialty items was increasing significantly. Most of this product was coming from New Zealand.
VGA President David Wallace thanked Rabobank for their support and updated guests on the current issues facing the vegetable industry. David also gave an update on the situation regarding Market relocation. This provoked considerable discussion amongst growers. The VGA executive looks forward to further informative discussions in the future.
