Promoting the Health Benefits of Vegetables

Two Veggycation workshops, communicating the health benefits of vegetables, were held in Victoria during September and attended by growers, wholesalers, marketers and dieticians.

The workshops provided an interactive and lively introduction to a new R&D project promoting the health benefits of vegetables and understanding the new rules regulating health and nutritional content claims on food labels and advertising.

The project, aims to highlight and promote the health benefits of vegetables to the broader community through a website and online educational material.

Of the nine major health benefit claims made on food labels, all can be obtained by eating vegetables – Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ).

It is also planned to use symbols, similar to the ‘heart tick’ to highlight the health benefits of each vegetable including sight, bones, heart and assisting with energy and hydration.

The website will have information specifically for children, veggy lovers and growers.

The Veggycation website will have a searchable database with educational downloads as well as a fun site for children and teachers.

The industry site will help lead you through the new FSANZ process of using health claims on-packaging and elsewhere to promote the health benefits of vegetables.

This project is funded by the National Vegetable Levy, through Horticulture Australia.
