Food Alliance Discussion Group

VGA Victoria participated in a Food Alliance discussion group at Deakin University on Monday 17th October.

The Food Alliance aims to identify, analyse and advocate for evidence-informed policies and regulatory reform to enable sustainable food security and healthy eating in the Victorian population.

A resilient fruit and vegetable supply is one of three key areas of advocacy for the Food Alliance.

VGA staff and growers Luis Gazzola and Peter Schreurs joined other stakeholders from across the fruit and vegetable supply chain and Government agencies.

Food Alliance is part of the Food Policy Unit at Deakin University and is funded by Vic Health.

The meeting identified policy solutions to barriers which threaten the viability of Victoria’s fruit and vegetable sector including :

    1. Low farmgate prices
    2. Rising input costs
    3. Loss of productive agricultural land
    4. Reduced water security
    5. Climatic variability
    6. Low fruit & vegetable consumption

The policy solutions identified during the discussion will be compiled by the Food Alliance into a report that will be made available online and promoted to relevant decision-makers.

The Food Alliance has also released a discussion paper on ‘Improving the resilience of Victoria’s fruit and vegetable supply.
