Native vegetation comprises plants that are indigenous to Victoria, including trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses. In Victoria, a permit is required to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation. On 20 December 2013 a package of reforms changed Victoria’s native vegetation permitted clearing regulations. The reforms included:
The permit application requirements use a risk-based pathway to assess the application to remove native vegetation. An online tool is available to assist landholders determine the risk-based pathway of their application to remove native vegetation. http://www.nvim.depi.vic.gov.au/Biodiversity Exemptions allow landholders to clear some native vegetation along fence lines to construct or maintain fences, without requiring a planning permit. You must obtain the consent from the Public Land Manager to clear any native vegetation on the public land side of the boundary fences. Applications for a permit to remove native vegetation must be lodged with the relevant responsible authority. In most cases this is the local council.
