Professor FaircloughVICTORIA University has appointed Wyndham councillor, Professor Bob Fairclough to further reduce the salinity of recycled water used for irrigation at Werribee South.

His appointment comes amid growing fears about the effect of saline irrigation water on the region’s soil and its long-term viability for horticulture.

Irrigation water salinity is still double the target both water authorities and growers were expecting this year.

Cr Fairclough said he was looking forward to working to reduce the amount of salt discharged into wastewater. “Collaboration with a number of parties, including local industries and the Wyndham Council, will be a key feature of the program,” he said.

“We’re also planning a campaign to encourage householders to switch to low salt laundry detergents.”

Local grower group, Water for Werribee, are lobbying for better quality and volume of irrigation water for Werribee South.
